After four months of planning, seven months of construction, two snowmageddon winter storms, dozens of selections, thousands of man hours, and one patient husband, the house is finished! It has been an incredible journey. Not only did I learn about the construction process, but I also had the great opportunity of discovering more about how we want to [...] Now that the walls are finished, we have several weeks of interior finishing — trim work, fireplace, and cabinets are being installed. It is particularly exciting to see the cabinets going in. The configuration and colors look great. And they are so functional! The family will have places to store things, surfaces for work and [...] We have been hit with another snow, and a big storm is on its way. All of this snow is slowing down the progress on the house — particularly the exterior. Since I cannot control the weather, I have decided to embrace it and have taken a few photos as a meditation on [...] The men are at work this week laying the wood floors. After spending so much time and attention on the walls, I was surprised to come to the house this week and see that the flooring is being installed. Each step is as transforming as the next. The "great room" — kitchen, dining and [...] The team has made tremendous progress in the past couple of weeks. With the walls completed, we have a real sense of the proportions and flow between the spaces of the house. Like Alice in Wonderland, various rooms have seemed to shrink and grow at different stages in the building process. Now they are all a [...] Our house construction is being managed by Ed Z. He is a real pro – on many fronts. In fact, he was previously a PGA Golf Professional! So just as a golfer plans his strategy from tee-off to sinking the ball on the putting green, Ed oversees the big picture and all the details of [...] It has been very educational to watch the walls go up and learn the steps involved in building. Walls do not just separate spaces, muffle sound, and allow you somewhere to hang that painting that your grandmother gave you — they are conduits for all kinds of activity. So much has to go through walls. Electrical lines, low-voltage wires [...] After the initial stone sample disaster, I was able to meet with the stone supplier and explain what I want. He listened, and I am cautiously optimistic that they will get it right the next time. He toured me around their huge facility. I should have not been surprised to learn that, like all aspects [...] We now have stairs in the house. No more rickety ladder climbs hoping my husband and builder won’t find out that I am sneaking up to check out the second story. It is exciting to see the stair design come into three dimensional space. I wanted the stairs to be different from the usual fare [...] I love stone. It is so solid, and natural, and grounding. The front of the house, as well as the fireplace in the family room, feature stone. I would have the whole foundation in stone as well if it didn’t break the bank. So I was very excited to go and see the stone sample [...] |
