The placement and design of our stairs are an important feature of the house. We wanted stairs that were offset from the main entryway, and that flowed down into the space, acting as a bridge to integrate the living room into the house. As usual, I spent time on details that I hadn’t even given [...] As I have mentioned in a previous post, I spent a lot of time working with a designer to create the look and function of our cabinetry throughout the house. I am excited to share that it is all being constructed now. I had the opportunity this week to go to the workshop where everything is being [...] Actually, I don’t think I am a knob snob, I just liked the headline. I have spent the past 2 days in a mind numbing Internet search for knobs. What should be an easy decision becomes a complex algebraic equation, which looks something like this: k(knob) = plumbing finish + cabinet style ÷ latest home decor [...] I love stone. It is so solid, and natural, and grounding. The front of the house, as well as the fireplace in the family room, feature stone. I would have the whole foundation in stone as well if it didn’t break the bank. So I was very excited to go and see the stone sample [...] I am now at the precious stage in the house design when I have to make selections. A lot of them. Like everything that will be in the house from the door knobs to the trim color to the countertops. Everything. I was kind of excited about picking out the lighting. Until I received the catalogues [...] Is one of these… ….worth two of these? I have been spending time this morning researching kitchen appliances. Lots of time. The I’m too focused to have breakfast, or get dressed or go to the bathroom kind of time. You would think that finding a few appliances would be easy, but it is not. It is [...] In addition to developing the layout, we also had to work with our builder and his team to design the exterior of the house. Although the area where we live is full of colonials, we wanted something different. And with lots of stone! I really wanted a varied roofline, instead of a large monolithic box with [...] It takes a village to build a house. There are several people that I have been working with in the development of the floorplan and the design of major house features.
