Time for Play

It isn’t all work at our lot.  Today I came upon the workers practicing their soccer skills!

The dumpster makes a great goal

Framing the House

This stage of the home building process is amazingly fast.  Just this week, the framers have come and framed out the entire basement and are already well on their way to completing the main floor.  It is really exciting to see the size and shapes of the rooms come to life.

Framers are already working [...]

Pouring the Slab

The slab was poured for the house yesterday.  There were multiple trucks and people on the lot.  The house looks great — it isn’t the prettiest sight (dull grey walls framing a flat grey surface) — but it does allow a real feel for the size and shape of the house.

I keep standing in different [...]

Appliance Angst

Is one of these…

….worth two of these?

I have been spending time this morning researching kitchen appliances.  Lots of time.  The I’m too focused to have breakfast, or get dressed or go to the bathroom kind of time.

You would think that finding a few appliances would be easy, but it is not.  It is [...]

Making Progress!

The construction team is back to work after the rain.  Last week they poured the cement retaining walls of the basement.  Now they are completing the process of readying the foundation.  Trucks continue to come in with dirt to level off and grade the front yard.  In addition, we have a plumbing crew placing pipes [...]

Working With Our Builder

It is a somewhat challenging time to be building a home and we did a lot of research in finding the right builder for us.  The real estate market uncertainties brought  a mixed blessing.  We found many builders seeking clients, and yet not all of them were in strong financial positions.  Builders in the area were going out of [...]

Exterior Design of the House

In addition to developing the layout, we also had to work with our builder and his team to design the exterior of the house.  Although the area where we live is full of colonials, we wanted something different.  And with lots of stone!

I really wanted a varied roofline, instead of a large monolithic box with [...]

Designing the Cabinets

It takes a village to build a house.

There are several people that I have been working with in the development of the floorplan and the design of major house features.   I hope to be able to feature these great professionals in the blog as things proceed.  I have learned a lot from everyone that I have worked [...]

Let the Building Begin!

Foundation outline is dug into the ground

Construction started today!

The crew has begun the process to prepare the footings and foundation for the house.  I felt like such an interloper on the lot today watching the workman go about their job.

It is kind of bitter sweet to watch something that has been in your head [...]

It's All About the Mudroom

As I mentioned in the previous post, the house was really designed around the mudroom.  With four busy people, we need a space in the house for triage.   (I can only imagine what this is like with a larger family).

Where will the kids put their gloves when they come in from playing outside?  Where will I [...]
